Isn't that what I learned in the 6th grade D.A.R.E program?

"Just say 'No', Kids!"

I've taken on so much work, I don't think it's possible to get it all done. What the hell was I thinking? Sure, I'm going to London in a few weeks, but I'll spend the entire trip feeling bad because of the work I still have to do. Yes, I'm going to Hawai'i in July, but I'll probably stress about work the whole time.

Yes, readers, this is my life. Work work work work work. When I'm not working, I'm thinking about work. What ever happened to the irresponsible Cort? You remember him don't you? The guy that never went to class? The guy that didn't ever study? The guy that took his sweet time getting through college? How do I bring him back?

I did come up with a solution last week....The California Lottery! It was up to $266 million. I was sure I was going to win. I could feel it in my bones. Mentally, I had already bought several homes. I didn't win....damn!

So now my summer will be spent in my 6' x 6' cube. That's a long time. Many things happen in 16 months. I could have had nearly two babies. I've gained enough weight to be carrying two babies. I've had 3 friends have babies in that time. Why am i discussing babies?

So what's new? Not a whole lot. I still work for <s>Satan</s> Deloitte. I still make peanuts (literally. Every two weeks a huge bag of peanuts is delivered to my desk. Super bizarre). I'm still single. I'm still "witty". I still don't look my age. I still live in California. I still watch too much tv. I'm still not a full fledged CPA.

Ok, so on to what IS new. I was promoted! I'm now a Senior Tax Consultant. What does that mean you ask? Well, I basically do the same thing for the same pay for longer hours and more responsibility. What does that really mean? Nothing. I just do more work. Instead of working until until 1 am. I work until 5 am. Hot damn!

What else? I bought a new car. I was shocked that the dealership accepted my peanuts. Apparently, the economy is in the pooper.

Any other news? I'm going to London in May. Anyone have suggestions of what I should do there? Does anyone still read this???

In short, the last year and half has been interesting. I've worked hard. I've gone to Hawai'i twice. I've visited my family. In short, I'm still me. I'm still here. I'm still alive. I'll try to post again within the next 16 months.

SIGH

Deloitte Tax Consultant I Conference, Orlando, Florida

Section 351....blah blah blah

Primary Authority....blah blah blah

Deferred Tax Assets....blah blah blah

Kill me!!!

This Is Some Mighty Fine Milk!

So PETA has recently come up with a WONDERFUL (and delicious) idea for America. Read here.

Yes, you read that correctly. I find it to be an intensely personal issue. In this day and age, it tends to divide and create irreconcilable differences between friends and family. Unfortunately, I've become sufficiently annoyed by certain claims and I've decided to blog about it.

Over the last 5+ years we've heard the liberal left screaming that the Bush tax cuts were for the rich. We've been told that his tax cuts shifted the tax burden to the middle class. We've been told that the rich are paying less in taxes than they ever have before. The left tells us that Bush helped out his rich friends.

So I ask: Is this the truth? Do the facts support this? Recently, the Internal Revenue Service ("IRS") released their Statistics of Income, 2008. This is a compilation of data concerning the 2006 tax year. It can be found here.

According to the data (i.e. the facts), the tax burden was NOT shifted to the middle class. According to the IRS statistics, the taxpayers in the top 10% in income levels paid 71% of the taxes. Let me say that again: THOSE IN THE TOP 10% PAID SEVENTY-ONE PERCENT OF THE TAX! How can that be? We've been repeatedly told that the top earners paid the least. According to the data, this is the highest level of taxes paid by the rich in 40 years. Additionally, the the top 25% of wage earners paid 86% of the tax and the top 50% of wage earners paid 97.1% of the taxes. WHAT THE HELL?

Yes, I am aware of the argument that the rich have more wherewithal to pay tax while the destitute do not have the same wherewithal to pay. Under a truly flat tax system, if you make 10% of the income, you'll pay 10% of the tax. If you make 99% of the income, you pay 99% of the tax, and so on. The fact that the top 1% percent (those making 22% of the total income) pay 40% of the tax tells us how steeply graduated the current tax system is. It is fairly obvious who is paying the tax and who isn't.

The great Mr. Obama has promised to tax the rich at an even higher rate. He has also promised to cut taxes for the bottom wage earners. What is he going to cut the tax rate to for the lower tax brackets? They're currently only paying 2.9% of the tax! Is his plan to have them pay zero tax? Is it his plan to have the top 50% pay for the bottom 50%? He talks of having a "more fair" tax system. How is it fair that the top pays it all while the bottom pays nothing?

It appears to me that by a "more fair" tax system, Mr. Obama wants to redistribute wealth. How dare someone be industrious and make money?! He has hinted that he wants people to be able to choose whatever career path they want without financial concerns. He seems to think that we should all be paid more or less equally no matter the job. The janitor and the CEO should both be paid equally. There shouldn't be any salary premium for extra education or job difficulty. What does that spell, kids? S.O.C.I.A.L.I.S.M! Is this what Mr. Obama meant by "economic justice"?

Interestingly, the Bush tax cuts are proving the Laffer Curve to be correct. According to this economic theory, tax rates above an optimal level will actually DECREASE tax revenue. So let's look at the facts once again. Bush cuts taxes and the rich pay more taxes. Hmmmmm, sounds like tax rates must have been above the optimal level. Mr. Obama wants to raise the tax rates. Accordingly, the rich will begin to pay LESS in taxes. I'm willing to bet this is exactly what will happen when Mr. Obama begins to play Robin Hood.

I just don't get it. Taxing the living hell out of people is not smart. It's simple economics. When my incentive to work is taken away, I stop working. Mr. Obama proposes to do exactly this. He wants to tax the rich as much as possible. Does he truly believe that they're going to continue to be industrious if they're only going to get to keep 30 to 40% of their money? The Wall Street Journal has estimated that the combined tax rate for the rich under Mr. Obama's tax plan will be roughly 67%. Yes, 67% will go to the government!

I work hard for my money and I want to keep it. I don't think it's "fair" that 2.5 days a week I work so that other people don't have to work all at. It's not fair that I busted my ass to get an education so that those that didn't choose to do the same can have MY money. I'm sorry but you're not entitled to anything. This is America. This is the country that has always believed in working hard. The American Dream was never to get handouts. Sadly, the American Dream is now getting something for nothing.

On the topic of Mr. Obama, he recently said the following:

"Now, in terms of knowing my commitments, you don't have to just look at my words, you can look at my deeds. Just this past week, we passed out of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee, which is my committee, a bill to call for divestment from Iran, as a way of ratcheting up the pressure to ensure that they don't obtain a nuclear weapon."

For a little context on this, you have to understand that Mr. Obama has been criticized for being merely a talker. Both John Edwards and Hilary Clinton attacked him for his voting record. The attacks on his voting record are well chronicled. I'm not going to rehash them now. The argument is that Mr. Obama doesn't have a history of action to back up what he preaches. He has yet to sponsor any significant bill in in the U.S. Congress. During his time in the Illinois legislature, Mr. Obama also failed to sponsor any significant bills. He merely votes presents rather than acutally DOING anything.

With this in mind, Mr. Obama points out that he does DO things. Look at what the U.S. Senate Banking Committee did! They are his committee. Here's proof that it's his committee. U.S. Senate Committee on Banking. Oh wait, there's no Mr. Obama there. Well, maybe he's on one of the subcommittees. Hmm...not there either. How exactly is this his committee?

The man just speaks pretty words. There isn't much substance to what he says. He has no record to back up his claims that he's going to change things. I'm sorry, but he doesn't have any history to prove he'll do anything other than give pretty speeches. Yes, Oprah supports. Yes, George Clooney thinks he's great. Now show me something of substance that he has done.

Again, I truly don't understand the Obamamania

How To Start August With A Bang

Date: August 1, 2008

Location: Deloitte Office, San Jose, California

Ring, Ring

Me: Hello?

Roommate: Hey

Me: What's up?

Roommate: Did the police call you yet?

Me (in my head): Oh shit, they found the body!*

Me (verbally): No.........

Roommate: Um....we were robbed!

Me: We were what? Where has the last six months gone? Is it just me, or does time go by faster the older you get. It seems like only yesterday that I was a measley undergrad at USU, living with 8 guys in a teeny, tiny apartment (or sleeping on a friend's couch for 3 weeks). I can't believe that was 5 years ago!

Things are the same with me. I work. I watch TV. I get fatter. Yay!!!

Wish I had something of value to share with you all, but alas I do not. And is the collar furry? Do you think you're Shaft or just Super Fly? And what's up with the dude in the right corner? Is he sporting some Beverly Hills 90210 style side burns? You aren't Jason Priestly, so shave the sideburns.

I'm also curious about the "Anti-Pornography Clubs" at both BYU and UVSC (or is it UVU now?). Don't you students have something better to do than form clubs against porn? I'm thinking maybe you should study...or get a damn job! And what are you doing at these club meetings? Are you watching things to determine if it's porn?..."There's a nipple...this is definitely porn. Let's keep watching to make sure...oh yea...she's getting naked...this is terrible stuff!"

It is my assumption that these clubs are filled with either:

a) former porn addicts who have swung to the opposite extreme
or b) current porn addicted self loathers.

Most likely it's a combo of both.

Honestly, these people embarrass me as a human, as a mormon, and just in general. I went to a Karaoke bar. Woah Woah Woah...settle down! Before you get too excited and piss yourself, let me explain one thing: I didn't sing. Are you kidding me? Me? Sing? In public? Riiiiiiiiight! Not happening. No way!

Nonetheless, the experience was interesting. I've always wondered what inspires people to get up and sing in front of mostly strangers (alcohol). Do these people secretly believe that they're diamonds in the rough (it's the alcohol)? The next big thing (See the following: Alcohol)? Or is it something else (again, alcohol)? I'm not quite sure...I'm thinking it's the alcohol.

Some of the people at the bar could actually sing quite decently. Most were quite bad. It was fun! The people watching was superb. I enjoyed trying to figure out which ones had been practicing. I really enjoyed the lady that would close her eyes for the dramatic parts. Ah, humans..you bring me much entertainment.

No music today. A) I don't have anything about Karaoke and B) Esnips isn't letting me upload any music (something about copyrighted music and blah blah blah..F them!)

'Tis The Season

Hello, 2008! So long 2007, you sucked my ass! It's that time of the year. You know, it's the time of year where you get all excited for something new. Oh the possibilities!!! Will this be the year that things are different, or will it just be another ho hum year??? It's January 1st! It's time to make the annual resolutions!

Last night I sat at my laptop and actually wrote out my resolutions and goals for the coming year. This is something new for me. Usually I just say "I'm going to be a better person this year..." and invariably I turn more cynical and bitter. This year I wrote out actual goals...so will I turn LESS cynical and bitter? hmm...probably not!

I spent the last 10 days in Utah. The land of cold weather and snow. How the hell did I live in that stuff?? I'm NOT made for cold weather (much like I'm not made for working...a life a leisure suits me best!). It was nice being home and being with my family. I got to see friends and enjoy myself. Mainly I relaxed and listened to my parents argue over nonsense...("Where's the remote?" "What remote?" "The other remote!" "I don't know what you're talking about!")

I'm planning on this year being different. I'm hoping to recapture a younger (and skinnier) Cort. One that was more carefree!

So welcome 2008...I hope you don't suck!

     Get this widget

|

     Track details

|

   eSnips Social DNA

To Wet Your Appetite

Here's a nice little diddy from youtube. This isn't even busy season and I'm working my arse off. It's sad.
I've also recently acquired a girlfriend. Many of you have heard about her. I can't talk about her enough. For those of your who haven't heard, she's 46", black, and shiny. I love her so much. Sammy is the best! I tutor a 6th grade girl on Thursday nights. A few weeks ago several of the other students were talking about their iPods. Another tutor and I made a comment about how we didn't even have a walkman when we were their age. One of the students stopped and asked, "What's a walkman?". What the duece?? Did you really just ask that? I remember asking my dad what an 8 track was. This girl is really asking me what a walkman is? I'm not that old! Walkman aren't that outdated. Holy hell, I feel so old!

I'll try to get back in the posting groove. In general my life is bland. There isn't much to post about. I work. I eat. I sleep. I work some more. I've thrown in a little reading, too. I finished "Into the Wild" by John Krakauer. It was great. I recommend it.

     Get this widget

|

     Track details

|

   eSnips Social DNA

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://cortucopia.blogspot.com/2007/12/excuse-me-im-not-that-old-little-girl.html' title='Excuse Me? I finished it tonight. It was one of the saddest/sweetest/saddest/endearing books I have ever read. It's the story of a young boy's journey towards healing after his father's death on September 11th. The book brought so many feelings, thoughts, and desires. It sadden me. It made me laugh. It inspired me.

At one point in the book, one of the characters discusses the various words that were used in the obituaries of people who died on September 11th.

Lawyer. Father. Mother. Accountant. Friend.

It got me thinking about what words would be used in my obituary if I were to die.

Brother. Friend. Son. Accountant.

What other words would be used to describe me?

Cynical. Pessimist. Sarcastic. Friendly? Kind? Loving?

I have, more or less, lived my life expecting the worst. My, de facto, personal motto has been, "If you expect the worst, you'll never be disappointed."

Tonight I am struck by what an incredibly sad way of life that is. I live expecting to be handed misery. I expect it. I live for it. I prepare for it. I sit around and I wonder why I am constantly a little depressed. Is it because I carry the weight of impending doom?

So the point of my rambling on this topic is that living life this way is empty. Sure, I'm never disappointed. But I'm also never hopeful. I never experience a "pleasant surprise" because I'm too busy expecting the other shoe to drop. Is this any real way to live? Can this type of life be considered living at all?

So I'm at a decision point. I can continue to live expecting the worst and never being disappointing. I can live my life never taking risks.

On the other hand, I can take risks. I can be disappointed by things. I can be hopeful. I can have live life instead of avoiding disappointment.

I want to take risks. I want to be disappointed. I want to expect good things. So here. Now. Today. Yay me!!

It's a little odd to be back here. I spent a year of my life here. I have good memories in this place, even if it's one of the most bizarre towns ever. I've had the chance to drive by some of the old hang outs. While I do not know anyone here, the memories linger (I'm looking your way Old Navy).

No music today because the vault is in California. It's called "The History of Love". It's an interesting book. It's a story of several different people who are influenced by a single book. I highly recommend it.

In reading this book, I've come across what may be the most beautiful line of words that I have ever read:

"Once upon a time there was a boy who loved a girl. And her laughter was a
question he wanted to spend his whole life answering."

There is something about that line that strikes me as incredibly moving/endearing/true/wonderful. I know...I know...It's corny, but I love it nonetheless.

I'm also reading another book entitled "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close". The author, Jonathon Safran Foer, is married to the author of "The History of Love"(Nicole Krauss). You should google them and learn about how their books are intertwined. It's interesting.

Mr. Foer also has a painfully beautiful line in his book. It is found at the beginning. In the acknowledgements.

"For Nicole, my idea of beautiful."

He sooo totally got laid after putting that in print. How could he not???

I feel that I must include at least one song that is equally beautiful as these two book quotes. I'm not sure that I am up to the task. I've searched high and lo, and, as of yet, I have not found anything nearly as wonderful. This is the best that I could do:

<table cellpadding="2" style="font-family:Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; I've noticed that I'm the type of person that holds on to things. Some people are able to just "let go" and move on. Not me. I let things fester and eat at me. I let the smallest things grow into monumental issues. I just can't seem to move on.

Why is this? Why is it that I am unable to just "let it go"? Sadly, I don't have an answer to this. I'm definitely trying to figure this out. It would seem that my life would be a lot less stressful if I could just let go. But then again, maybe that's why I can't let go. Maybe I need the added stress and heartache.

A few weeks ago I was involved in a discussion about forgiveness. I would consider myself a forgiving person. I put up with a lot from people and I forgive. I've often allowed myself to be in some unhealthy relationships because I continually forgive. The problem is that I hit a breaking point in which there is no further forgiveness. After so much, I just can't forgive. Once I reach that point, I hold on to hurt/bitterness/anger. I refuse to forgive. It's once again the issue of not being able to "let go". I've decided this is an unhealthy trait.

So how do I change this? How do I learn to let go and forgive? How do I learn to truly let go?

Unfortunately, this post isn't going to end with some insightful statement. I truly don't know the answers to my own questions. If and when I find the answers, I'll share.

Get this widget

Track details

eSnips Social DNA

This song cycled through the iPod today. I still remember the first time I heard it. I'm not talking about this particular version. The first time I remember hearing this hymn, I was lying on a smelly bed feeling homesick in Brazil. I love it now as much as I loved it then.

This is actually the most beautiful version of the song I've ever heard. Maybe it's the banjo...I don't really know. Sufjan's version has brought a tear to my eye on more than one occasion.

Come Take A Ride On My Train

I've recently come to the conclusion that moving forces you to change. I don't care how small the move is, you're always forced to change. When you pack, you have to throw out some things. I guess when you "pack up your life", you're forced to throw out stuff too. It's interesting.

I'm sure you're wondering what changes I've made in my life due to this move. Well we all know that I have a lot to change, but this move has forced me to get out of my shell to some degree. I really struggle with getting outside of myself. I'm comfortable being shy with those I don't know. I prefer to be the wallflower rather than the conversation initiator. Being in a new place, job, and ward is making me initiate conversations rather than waiting for others to come to me. It's been an interesting experience.

I was recently back in Utah. It was good to see friends. It was good to make a few new friends. It was a good trip. I enjoyed myself.

The End

     Get this widget

|

     Track details

|

   eSnips Social DNA

The Love Affair Rages On!!

I'm continuing my Feist fascination for another day. I've been busy, get off my back! Ok, that's not really true either. I've been lazy. Now that's true.

Things have been rather uneventful. I work. And by work I mean I sit at my viewbicle (yes, a viewbicle not a cubicle. I'll take a picture and you'll all understand), and surf the internet for 8 hours. I'm not totally sure why the firm didn't wait until after the 9/17 deadline to have us start. Oh well, I don't mind getting paid to read celebrity gossip!

I'm getting excited for the fall TV season to start. As a primer here's the new office commercial. I'm sure you've probably already seen it. Enjoy!

I've also found the love of my life! Yes, I'm in love. Ok, not like for real in love but I re-fell in love with Feist. Here's a video. Apple has been using it in their iPod Nano commericial. One piece sequinned jump suit thing? Check. Dancing? Check. An 80's feel? Upbeat tempo? Check. An adorable little bow at the end? CHECK!!!! It's the bow that made me love her. I spent saturday watching football....ALL DAY!!!! It was wonderful. I wait all year for college football to start. It gives me something "productive" to do on Saturdays. It's delightful.

My roommates and I went sea kayaking up in Saulsalito on Monday. We paddled across the bay and took some pictures. I'll eventually get around to posting the few pictures that I took.

Apparently, I'm incapable of applying sunblock properly. I missed the entire top portion of my forehead and it's now beet red. I also missed streaks on my legs and arms. I have rows of sunburns. It's like I have funny red birthmarks all over.

While we were kayaking, we were privy to two amazing sights. First, we were standing on the shore getting ready to paddle out into the bay. There was a classy gentleman next to us who decided to get into his swimsuit. He was too lazy to walk the 50 feet to the bathroom, so he went for the "towel change". A) the towel was too small and B) he wasn't good at the towel change. We all got a view of his man parts. We were disgusted.

Second, after kayaking we changed and headed back out to the parking lot. On the way to the parking lot (which was like 10 feet from the bathroom) we encountered the following conversation and scene:

5 year old girl: Mom, I need to go to the bathroom
Mom: Just pee here
5 year old girl: I can't
Mom: Do it!

The little girl proceded to squat down and pee through her swimming suit right next to a tree. It was one of the most disturbing scenes ever. I feel dirty even recounting the story.

I need to shower now.......

It's Not That I'm Lazy. I'd Just Rather Lay On The Couch And Watch TV.

Four day weekends are the best! It's utterly blissful to know that I didn't have to work yesterday and I don't have to work today, tomorrow, OR Monday! Every weekend should be a four day weekend. It's wonderful! Hooray four day weekend!!!

So I was spectacularly productive today. I watched football all day and did my laundry. Woohooo!!!

It appears that the trainwreck formerly known as Britney Spears has a new single that is going to drop soon. Check it out: Britney's New Single. It's delightful. It consists of "Give me more...give me more...give me more." I don't think she says much else. What more is she asking for? Crazy? I think she has plenty of crazy. She doesn't need more. Oh yea, she says, "It's Britney, Bitch!"
What a lyricist she is!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://cortucopia.blogspot.com/2007/09/its-not-that-im-lazy-id-just-rather-lay.html' title='It's Not That I'm Lazy. I Get Better With Age.

So tonight our tax new hire group decided to go out to dinner together. They're good people and I enjoyed myself. It was a little odd to be the only one driking water.

Them: "Want a drink?"
ME: "Yes, a water would be nice."
Them: "Um...I meant like a REAL drink."
Me: "Water isn't real? Holy crap....."
Them: "You're weird."
Me: "I know."

In my mind I'm perpetually 18 years old. Sometimes when I look in the mirror I'm shocked to see this adult looking back at me. I expect to see this young boy and instead seen an old boy. Yes, I said boy because I am no man....all boy, baby!

I'm the type of person that is keenly aware of my faults. I know I'm not the most mature person in the world. It is interesting to be around people that are younger than you. You get to see that you're not quite as immature as you thought. You see that you actually have goals in life besides getting hammered tonight. Your life revolves around growing and progressing as a person rather than partying and "living it up". I guess I have grown up over the years. AMAZING!!

Things are going well here in California. I'm once again working(or rather I sit in a conference room and learn that I'm not suppose to sexually harrass my coworkers...apparently talking about breasts is frowned upon....who knew?). I've also learned that spandex are not appropriate work attire. Quite interesting!

Luckily the HR orientation stuff is done and we're starting on tax related training. I'll be doing busy work for the next few weeks and then, hopefully, we'll get started doing some real work.

No music tonight...I'm too lazy to think of something to post. Maybe tomorrow.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://cortucopia.blogspot.com/2007/08/im-like-fine-wine-i-get-better-with-age.html' title='I'm Like A Fine Wine. They currently have a series called "Feasting on Asphalt". The host and crew travel across the country eating at local mom and pop restaurants. On this episode they were in the South. They stopped at a Tamale restaurant (oddly enough Tamales are a big thing in the Delta Basin). Apparently, the local delight is something known as a Koolickle. What is a Koolickle you ask? Oh yes...let me tell you!! It is a dill pickle that has been "marinated" in Kool-aid. Yes, a DILL PICKLE MARINATED IN KOOL-AID!!!! What the hell???? The damn thing is Kool-Aid red.

Anyway, I finally have to start working again strting tomorow. My days of sleeping in until noon and watching TV all day are over. I am once again enslaved to the man. Sigh.... I will once again be waking up at 7 am and being a real adult. What a load of crap! I was made to live a life a leisure. Why can't I be Paris Hilton?? I wouldn't get a DUI and I'd ALWAYS wear my panties in public.

Today's song is another by I'm From Barcelona. I really dig this band. They're quirky and upbeat.

     Get this widget

|

     Share

|

     Track details

No oversleeping tomorrow.

I'm Still In The Running To Become America's Next Top Model!

Ok, so I spent that afternoon watching America's Next Top Model on MTV. They showed the entire 6th season. No need to make fun. I know it's lame that I watched it. What can I say? I'm distracted by pretty things.

Anyway, I seriously hate Tyra Banks. She's so damn annoying and I can't even put my finger on all the reason that I hate her. I simply just hate her. The primary reason is that she's a narcissist. It's annoying. I know that she's a narcissist because I, too, am a narcissist. The difference is that my narcissism is charming!

But seriously....Tyra, you aren't Oprah...and you're fat. Sorry, you're not big boned. YOU ARE FAT! Don't tell us that you've always been this same weight.

P.S. your talk show sucks. How can I take you seriously? You're scared of dolphins...DOLPHINS!! Who the hell is scared of flipper?

So I'm not including any music today. Instead you're going to get a youtube video. The video has been around for a few weeks so maybe you've already seen it. It's some filipino prisoners recreating the Michael Jackson "Thriller" video. Pinoy power!!!

Yes, the "lady" is bald. Sometimes I really forget what a creature of habit I am. I get accustomed to things being a certain way and I get flustered when there's a change. I've always considered myself to be laid back and easy going. This move has reminded me that I don't like change as much as I thought. Eventually I'll get a routine down and I'll feel comfortable again.

Some people really adjust to change easily. I know people that don't get stressed out about leaving their comfort zones. I AM NOT ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE! Why is that? Why is it easy for some and, yet, oh so difficult for others?

Change always leads to reflection for me. I talked to a friend of mine from St. Louis. He is someone that I have some really good memories with. I really looked up to him back in the day. I'm not sure he ever knew that. Anyway, it was good to hear from him and reminisce about old times and people we once knew.

I'm including a song that reminds me of riding around in a Ford Escort and taking a long drive from Belleville to Cape Girardeau, MO just to see a girl.

Get this widget

|

Share

|

Track details

Yes, I know it's Erasure.

Get this widget

|

Share

|

Track details

Here's a gem of a song that I'd forgotten about. I'm no longer surrounded by conservative Republicans. I'm in the land of Democrats.

My first full day has been relatively uneventful. I haven't watced any TV today so I can't make any commentary on that....

Here is a song and it's not by Chan Marshall...stay tuned You'll get it.

<table cellpadding="2" style="font-family:Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; I'm worn out from the drive and yet i'm tossing and turning. I need my sleep...i crave my sleep....someone give me a sedative. For those of you that don't know what ambien does to me, see below:

For some reason I can't get this song out of my head:

Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power, has one of the most beautiful voices ever. This song, "How Can I Tell You?", was originally recorded by Cat Stevens. His version doesn't hold a candle to this 30 second snippet by Chan. I know the commercial has been around for about 6 months. I still just can't get over how amazing Chan sounds. It pisses me off to no end that there isn't a full version of the song available. Hopefully Chan will realize how much her fans want her to do a full version. Until then, I'll remain depresse

I expect to have access to my music collection tomorrow. Stay tuned for a possible Cat Power appearance on Cortucopia.

Cue The Theme Song From The O.C.

I made it. I'm leaving. Tomorrow is the day that I hit the road and head for California. The journey has been delayed due to the cold that I caught last weekend. I've got some books on tape, the car is packed, and I'm ready to go!

I've been anticipating this move for months. The idea of moving some place new has been exciting. Now that the day has arrived, I'm nervous. I have no idea what the future holds for me there. Will I make friends? Will they be as great as the friends I'm leaving behind? Will I like it? These are the concerns and fears that fill my heart.

When I moved to Utah 13 years ago, I hated it. As a kid, my family moved a lot. I was used to moving and I never minded it. Moving to Utah was the hardest move I ever made. Eventually, I came to like it here. I have friends that mean the world to me. I've learned and grown so much here.

The point of all of this, is that I'm going to miss Utah. I never thought I'd say that 13 years ago. I will miss the mountains. I will miss the easiness of being in Utah with people that understand my beliefs, feelings, ideas, etc. I will miss my friends. Most of all I will miss my family who has been there for me through it all.

I'm including "Goodbye" by Jeff Buckley. It's a beautiful song and it says what I want to say to you all. I'm still getting my stuff together for the big exit. I've been working on getting all my CD's ripped to my external hard drive. I have a lot of CD's that I haven't listened to year in years. There are a lot of hidden gems amongst these CD's. I can't wait to re-learn about their splendidness!

Here is a song from Built To Spill. I forgot how much I really like this song. It's quirky but it's great. Obviously, Doug Martsch is singing about a girl but I think the hook of the song is applicable to what we're all looking for in a person (be it a lover or friend). "Someone I can talk to. Someone I don't have to talk to." We want people in our lives that we can talk to but we don't want to feel like we HAVE to talk to them. We want people in our lives that we can just spend time with. We want people that understand us. People that listen. People that we can discuss things with. We also want people that we can just be with.

Anywho, thems are my thoughts. It's right up there with vomiting, diarrhea, acne, and genital herpes (not that I've had genital herpes...i've just heard). It's like taking a test. I get stressed out and worried that I'm forgetting something, or that I'll need something I threw out. Ugh!!!

As I'm preparing to make my move to California, I'm doing an inventory of my possessions. Frankly, I have a lot of crap. I have lamps from college, an obscene amount of CD's, clothes that in no way fit me (nor will they ever), books, toys, trophies (what am I 12?), and I even have a pair of handcuffs. I have clothes that I bought from the DI. I have a shark's jaw. I have a Brazilian Indian face painted on a coconut. How the hell did I accumulate so much crap?

It is interesting seeing these things. Most items bring back some memory. Most memories are good, but others are sad. Memories are a good thing. I think at times we forget how wonderful memories are. I was recently reminded of this when I was up visiting some friends from college. As we talked about past activities, it was like we were there again. It was wonderful! I get nostalgic and happy and sad and grateful all at the same time. I love memories. Even the painful ones!

This whole post reminds me of the movie "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". It's like when Joel is having his mind erased. He gets down on his knees and begs God to help him stop his mind being erased. He realizes that having his mind erased will cause him to lose the happy memories along with the painful ones. As I think back over my life, I would gladly keep my painful memories in order to hold on to those blessed happy ones!

On that note, I'm including a song by Jon Brion from the "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" soundtrack. He's good.....with a funny voice. I like people with funny voices, but that's because I have a funny voice. Did you know I've been mistaken for a woman who smokes a lot? Well I have..........

<table style="PADDING-LEFT: 2px; On that note, I've been pondering the idea of sharing my thoughts, feelings, musical whimps, and all of the above using the interweb for quite awhile. I kept saying I was going to do it, but...well....I never did. Awhile back, I got an email from a certain somebody and found out that they had started a blog (http://richieandjulesandruby.blogspot.com/). This motivated me to do it...so here I am!

I figure, like Richie and Julie, this would be a good way for those of you living far away (and nearby) to get an inside look at my head. Now you can see the hamster spinning in its wheel. It'll be a blast!!!!! Hopefully you will all find this to be relatively enlightening/humorous/disturbing.

In closing, I say "Come one...Come all..Taste me...I'm Delicious!"

Get this widget

Share

Track details
